Second Form Latin update - week 30

In today's class we finished our grammar lessons for the year by learning how to form 4th conjugation verbs and 3rd conjugation -io verbs in the present system passive voice.  The students need to be especially careful not to confuse many of the noun vocabulary words this week with passive verb forms.

Next week we will be reviewing for the final - the students need to bring their devices (smart phone or tablet) to class for the game that we will play.

Homework:

1.     Read pages 76-77
2.     workbook pages for lesson 26  – pages 165-171
3.     Note cards  and derivatives

First Form Latin update - week 30

Well, we are really winding down.  Today was the last lesson for the school year - next week we will review, and the last week we will have our final exam in class. Because we are reviewing next week - if students would please bring their devices with them (smart phone or tablet) - we will be playing a game and I'll forward information soon on the app that is needed to play.

Today's lesson focused on the remaining 2nd conjugation verbs and their principal parts as well as covering the perfect system of 2nd conjugation verbs.

Homework:
1. Read the text book pages 80-81
2. Workbook pages for lesson 32 - pages 165-169.
3. Add the remaining principal parts to your notecards
4. Be sure to review previous vocabulary.
5. Be sure to review declension endings and verb endings.
6. Be sure to review the grammar in the back of the workbook!

Second Form Latin update - week 29

In today's class we learned the present system, passive for the third conjugation verbs.  This conjugation continues to use the same passive endings as the other passive forms - and that 2nd person singular continues to be the one irregularity in the system.

We also discussed words in English that end in ous/ious. That ending means "full of" - so we had fun trying to think of words that end in those letters and what they mean: anxious - full of anxiety; dangerous - full of danger; ubiquitous - full of "everywhere;" contagious - full of contagions. We also talked about how sometimes the meaning isn't obvious and you have to go back to the Latin root like with copious - full of supply. Once you start thinking about them, it's hard to stop!

Homework:
1. Read pages 74-75
2. Workbook pages for lesson 25 - pages 159-164
3. Notecards + derivatives

First Form Latin update - week 29

2. Workbook pages for lesson 31: pages 161-164

Second Form Latin update - week 28

In today's class we learned the Present system passive for 2nd conjugation verbs.  We also learned a new construction called the Ablative of Means.  It's important to see the differences between these forms:
I walk with Anna (cum + ablative as it's accompaniment)
I write with a pen (ablative of means - no preposition used)

Congratulations to the great scores you all received on the National Latin exam!

Homework:
1. Read pages 72-73
2. workbook pages for lesson 24 - pages 152-158
3. Note cards -- you don't need to do any derivatives this week!

First Form Latin update - week 28

In today's class we continued with the 2nd conjugation learning the imperfect and future tenses.  The students should find this quite easy as the endings are the same as 1st conjugation.

Congrats to Aidan and Grace for their excellent scores on the National Latin exam!

Homework:
1. Read the text book pages 76-77
2. Workbook for lesson 30 - pages 156-160
